When the daily report becomes a daily project.
The report is the visible output. Collecting, reconciling, and explaining the numbers is the process worth mapping.
Follow every number back
Choose one recurring production report and trace its inputs. Identify which figures come from source systems, which are copied from spreadsheets, and which require a phone call. Record the definitions as well as the sources.
Find the reconciliation work
Two correct numbers can disagree because they use different cutoffs, units, or definitions. Map the adjustments people make before the report is shared. Those adjustments often contain important operating knowledge that a new dashboard would otherwise miss.
Connect first, summarize second
Agree on the measures and build a dependable data view before adding automated commentary. AI may help draft an explanation from validated inputs, but the team still needs a route back to the underlying records and a review of material conclusions.
Judge the report by the decision
Measure preparation effort, corrections after publication, and how promptly an exception reaches its owner. A useful report helps the team choose an action. Adding more charts without changing that decision can add work instead of removing it.
